The Back-to-School Deadline: Timing Your Move Around the School Year

By early August, back-to-school aisles are full of backpacks, notebooks, and new shoes, while family calendars start filling up with school-year plans.

For many families, that seasonal reset brings a bigger question: are we in the right home for this school year?

Families often feel pressure to move either before school starts or not at all. But the school calendar can work for you or against you, depending on how you plan.

Here is how to handle the Back-to-School Deadline:

Plan the Move Around Breaks. Winter break and spring break can be natural moving windows. Families do not always have to move in summer.

Know Your Attendance Rules. Some districts have specific rules on when and how a family can enroll or transfer. Contact the district directly before you buy.

Fall Buyers Are Motivated. Buyers searching in the fall are often serious about moving soon. With less competition than spring, it can be a great time to list.

The market is fair, but it is not forgiving. The families who move smoothly are the ones who plan around the calendar instead of racing it.
